There is an old saying that yesterday’s hardship is today’s “Good-old-days”.
I call it misapplied nostalgia and you see it everywhere from okes who were in the military to people who lived through Communism or Apartheid.
In psychological terms it is called Pollyannaism or positivity bias. The human mind tends to block out the bad things and remember only the good things. It is actually nothing but self-deception.
That is why, when you speak to people who lived in the Communist GDR (Est Germany), many will tell you, “Oh, but it wasn’t all that bad. We also had good times”.
Yes, People would stand three hours in queue to get a ration of two bananas and a packet of strawberries. They would wait 12 years for a two-stroke Trabant car, and still not get it. People would get shot for fleeing this Socialist paradise, yet hundreds of people attempted it every year with tunnels, makeshift windsurfers and hot-air balloons. But it wasn’t all that bad.
Today we see the same with Corona. In the future people will look back to Corona 2020 and tell their grandchildren, “Oh, but it wasn’t all that bad. We had fun times too.”
Human beings are extremely adaptive. It is probably the ONE characteristic that made us survive so well. Slowly we are seeing people getting used to “The New Normal”…getting used to wearing those filthy mouth nappies…People are self-deceiving in order to survive, to lessen the pain of being in a concentration camp…Like Alexander Solzhenitsyn who wrote in “The Gulag Archipelago” about his experience in the Communist Hell-camps… “It is enough if you don't freeze in the cold and if thirst and hunger don't claw at your insides. If your back isn't broken, if your feet can walk, if both arms can bend, if both eyes see, if both ears hear, then whom should you envy?”
Bullshitting yourself is therefore a survival instinct and a reaction to harsh times. The problem with self-deception is that people deceive themselves that they are deceiving themselves.
You try to point out to a person that he is bullshitting himself, he will go on the defence and bullshit himself that he is NOT bullshitting himself.
Take the masks…these mouth nappies people wear…Most people think it works like a strainer. When you breathe out, the baddy germies stay behind and only the clean CO2 and air passes through the mask.
I saw some YouTube videos that people fwd’d to me about how the N95 mask actually works more like a spider web catching spiders in your breath and again… the clean CO2 and air passes through the mask.
I am sitting there, thinking, “Hang on a minute. That is NOT how these masks work! My mask works more like a table-tennis table. Everything ricochets”
When I breathe out and I put my hand in front of the mask, FUCK-ALL comes out through the mask. Instead, all the CO2 and air are deflected upwards or to the sides. In fact wherever there is an opening, it will come out. The air follows the path of least resistance and 99% of whatever you breathe out NEVER passes through the filter. It simply passes out the openings UNFILTERED. A bit of moisture from your lungs sticks to your glasses, your face or the inside of the mask, which starts to get soggy and drippy after about five minutes use…and then you watch them take it off with their bare hands, lay that filthy piece of shit on their desks or heaven forbid, on the lunch table, as if it is the cleanest thing ever, and afterwards don it again.
Now you try to point out the truth to them. Try tell them what I just told you above and see their reactions. They are still not convinced. They are still convinced that the air passes through the filter and the baddy germies stay behind.
People are convinced that they are good people. They are convinced that they are saving lives by wearing the mask. They are further convinced that you, who point out their self-deception to them, are a bad person. You, who complain about wearing a mask, care nothing for other people’s lives. You are egotistical and only care about yourself.
See? It becomes all emotional. It is all about “caring” and “feeling”. Rationality flies out the porthole.
You ask them…when they care so much about saving lives, why do they not demand the lockdown of 150,000 taxis in South Africa? Then they can save 14,000 lives a year.
Same when it comes to individual freedoms and the constitution. Try to point out the reality to people that the Constitution, along with all their freedoms have been suspended indefinitely, they balk at you. “No ways…we still have a constitution…people are still allowed to demonstrate, etc”.
Yeah right…Like in Germany the other day where people had to go to court twice to be allowed to demonstrate in Berlin. Demonstration is a constitutional right. You don’t need police approval. And even then, the police funneled the people (instead of making space for them to demonstrate) and when they could not adhere to distancing the police broke up the demo. At the next demo they must wear masks.
So yes…you are allowed to demonstrate (theoretically), but with so many restrictions that nobody bothers anymore. Sure, you are allowed to drive to France, Spain or the Netherlands…just when you come back, you must get tested and be quarantined for two weeks and pay €200 (R4000) for the test yourself.
But people bullshit themselves and believe that the Constitution is still in place. They honestly believe their governments are still adhering to it as a guide. Just look at the state of Victoria and Melbourne in Australia. What a prime example of a modern Western democracy upholding the constitution and the will of the people.
A federal judge in Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania in the United States had to remind Governor Tom Wolf and state Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine that they do not have untold power to do as they please. There is still that nasty bit of check on their powers called “The Constitution of the USA”.
Judge William S. Stickman IV has ruled that the state's coronavirus restrictions, specifically the stay-at-home order and the order to close all non-life-sustaining businesses, violate the Constitution.

making laws that “abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States” or taking action that “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of the law.”
The limitations placed on the number of people who may gather in any one place at a time — 25 people indoors and 250 people outdoors — violate the First Amendment, Stickman ruled.

Judge William S. Stickman IV |
Specifically, Judge Stickman ruled that the two orders violated the 14th Amendment, which prohibits states from
making laws that “abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States” or taking action that “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of the law.”
The limitations placed on the number of people who may gather in any one place at a time — 25 people indoors and 250 people outdoors — violate the First Amendment, Stickman ruled.
Said the Good Judge: “Even in an emergency, the authority of government is not unfettered. The liberties protected by the constitution are not fair-weather freedoms — in place when times are good, but able to be cast aside in times of trouble.
The solution to a national crisis, such as the coronavirus pandemic, can never be permitted to supersede the commitment to individual liberty that stands as the foundation of the American experiment.
The Constitution cannot accept the concept of a ‘new normal’ where the basic liberties of the people can be subordinated to open-ended emergency mitigation measures.
Rather, the Constitution sets certain lines that may not be crossed, even in an emergency. Actions taken by Defendants crossed those lines.”
God bless judges like Judge William S. Stickman IV.
